Russia: Belarus has right to recall ambassadors for consultations
17:33, 19/02/2004

Russia plans to take no similar steps in response to the decision made by Minsk to recall the Belarussian ambassador from Moscow for consultations, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry’s information and press department told ITAR-TASS on Thursday. “It is a right of the Belarussian authorities to recall their ambassador for consultations.” “Russia plans no steps of that sort,” the foreign ministry source said.

ITAR-TASS earlier reported from Minsk that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko had decided on a temporary recall of the Belarussian ambassador from Moscow in the wake of the discontinuation by Gazprom to supply gas to his country.

Lukashenko described as “an unprecedented step” Gazprom’s move. According to the Belarussian president, “Our relations with Russia from now on will be poisoned with gas for a long time.”
