Hrodna Businessman Dzmitry Ivanowsky Went On Hunger Strike 13:22, 04/03/2004
Dzmitry Ivanowsky was sentenced to 10 days of arrest for organizing a “silent demonstration” of the small traders of the markets that took place on March 1. In the courtroom on March 3 Ivanowsky said that he goes on hunger strike, Radio Svaboda informs.
On March 1 about 500 traders staged a silent protest in front of the regional executive committee. It was aimed against deterioration of their labour’s conditions. Deputy chair of the civil association “Perspektiva” Dzmitry Ivanowsky was not among them. The day before the action he was detained with leaflets urging people to participate in the silent protest. Dzmitry Ivanowsky was fined one basic unit by the October district court of the city. After the protest he was summoned to the Lenin district police department to charge with organizing the protest in which he did not participate. On March 3 judge of the Lenin court Natallya Koziel delivered a verdict that he was the architect of the silent meeting and sentenced him to 10 days of arrest.
