A judicial trial starts in Ivatsevichi. Defendant is the editorial office of the independent newspaper “Gazeta dlia Vas” and one of its correspondents. The action was brought by a former deputy prosecutor of Byarozawski region. She demands a compensation 10 million rubles for moral damage from the editorial office and one million rubles from journalist Tamara Schapyotkina.
Navapolatsk authorities disrupted a meeting of a well-known philologist and public figure, chairman of the Popular Front Party Vincuk Vyachorka with students. The meeting was to take place in the building of Jakub Kolas library. Vyachorka was to read a report to the students of the historic and philology faculty of local university and all interested. The report’s topic was “Problems of Belarusian orthography reforming and widening of the Belarusian language usage in present-day conditions” , Radio Svaboda informs.
Local authorities cannot forget the riot of the young people in Baranavichy state college of light industry. The deputy headmaster on educational work N. Kuchura was dismissed. The headmaster of the college Alaxandar Lis was reprimanded. On April 5 the Ministry of Information issued a warning to the editorial office of independent “Mestnaya gazeta”. The newspaper is charged with violation of the articles 11 and 26 of the Law on Press, and non-compliance with a number of requirements relating the design of the newspaper, press-service of the Belarusian Association of Journalists informs.
“Policy of hard actions is carried out against important segments of civil society in Belarus. Non-governmental organizations that are engaged in monitoring of human rights violations and other worthy goals, are pressurized. The authorities apply decrees and laws in a restrictive and often too bureaucratic way. A great number of non-governmental organizations was liquidated,” – told head of the OSCE mission in Minsk Eberhard Heiken in his interview to the BelaPAN agency during his first visit to Brest on April 5-6.
