Trade Union Activists Detained In Polatsk 12:38, 09/04/2004
On April 8 regional organization of Independent Trade Union of Belarus has held an information action in support of the chairman of the trade union branch at company “Polatsk-Shklovalakno” Vktar Stukaw. The action was carried out by the entrance checkpoint of the company. The information materials about contract system and imminent sacks of trade union activists were disseminated. Besides, signatures in support of Viktar Stukaw were collected. Police officers have detained two trade union members – chairman of the regional organization of Independent Trade Union of Belarus Uladzimir Antanovich, and Viktar Stukaw. According to police, they are charged with unsanctioned picketing.
“We are convinced that we have not violated law, -- Uladzimir Antanovich told. – Workers of the company together with their friends from the trade union informed the employees about what is happening on the factory. The protest was not held in the city, that is why no sanction was required for it”.
Administrative reports have been drawn up against two trade union activists, and trial is to be held in the court of Polatsk today, “Prafsajuzny Rukh Belarusi” informs.
