PACE Resolution Is Just a Beginning
17:06, 10/05/2004, Iryna Krasowskaya

The report of Mr. Christos Pourgourides “Disappeared in Belarus” was supported by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. It is a victory! It is a light in the end of a tunnel for us, relatives of those, who had disappeared not during the war, but were abducted in the time of peace in the center of Europe, just before the presidential elections in Belarus – Yuri Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, Anatol Krasowski, Dzmitry Zavadski. The report has been approved by the PACE previous to the 5-year anniversary of Yuri Zakharanka’s disappearance. What do these years mean to us? They were full of struggle for survival, a struggle for the honor of our relatives, a struggle for finding out the truth, a struggle against the machine of the state power, which has been trying to bury the truth as deep as possible, a struggle with unashamed scorn of the state newspapers, television, and of a person who is calling himself a guarantor of the Constitution. And nevertheless the report has been approved! And it is the beginning of another stage in the search for truth. It is an exceptionally important result in search of the truth about the destiny of the disappeared people in Belarus. Until the last moment there were doubts that it would be approved, as we had been going to it for a very long time, and the accusations against the authorities were too grave, and the measures proposed were too harsh, but the effective and just ones.

He urged Belarus to release Marinich "immediately" and also expressed concern over "the persecution of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee... as well as Anatoly Lebedko, the Chairman of the United Civic Party, and a leading opposition figure."
