Piks to address Council of Europe`s committee of ministers 11:12, 17/05/2004, Latvian News Agency
Minister of Foreign Affairs Rihards Piks` (People`s Party) visit to Strasbourg continues today, where he is participating in a meeting of the Council of Europe`s Committee of Ministers. The committee is to hear Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Bot`s report today on what has been achieved in the past six months when the Committee of Ministers was chaired by the Netherlands. Piks will address the Committee of Ministers today to speak about reform of the European Court of Human Rights and the importance of promoting cooperation between the Council of Europe and the European Union. Piks will also touch upon the pre-election situation in Belarus, and call on the international community to watch developments in Belarus and support democratic forces in this country.
Participants of the meeting of the Committee of Ministers will discus reform of the European Court of Human Rights, organization of the Council of Europe`s third summit, the Council of Europe`s cooperation with other international organizations and its contribution to combating terrorism.
While in Strasbourg, Piks is to hold meetings with Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen and Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul.
