Criminal Actions Brought Against Young Oppositionists

As the press center of the Charter’97 has just found out, the information about criminal cases against two underage activists of opposition. 17-year-old Katsyaryna Klimko and Maxim Gromau were detained late at night on May 25 for distribution of leaflets with a slogan “Free Marynich!”. During detention Maxim Gromau was beaten. Reports have been drawn against the tow young people for violation of the Article 143 of the Administrative Code of Belarus. Next morning the young were detained again at their way to school and were taken to the Soviet District Police Department of Minsk. They are still there. The night they spent in the pre-trial detainment center. At the moment a criminal case has been brought against them, supposedly on charges relating articles 341 or 218 of the Criminal Code (Deliberate damage of property and Defilement of property). The investigation is carried out by E. Matkova. About 6 p.m. the first interrogation of the accused in presence of the lawyer is to start.

EU urges Belarus to end isolation with polls

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana called on Belarus Wednesday to use elections later this year to end its diplomatic isolation, as he met key opponents of the Minsk regime in Brussels. Solana said the autumn legislative polls could provide the opportunity for authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko to open up the democratic process in his former Soviet republic.

Human Rights Watchdogs Apartments Searched

Apartment of ex-chairman of Republican youth public association “Civil Forum” Ivan Neverau was searched by the unknown, who told they are police officers. The search took place on May 18, but Neverau found out about it in a week, when he returned from Vilnius, where he took part in a seminar for managers of election command centers.

Mikhail Marynich Support Committee Created

A well-known reporter of the Russian TV channel ORT, Pavel Sharamet, told that committee of civil support of former minister and ambassador Mikhail Marynich has been organized. The founders of the committee think that repressions against Mikhail Marynich are a continuation of actions carried out against Yuri Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, Henadz Karpenka and other oppositionists. According to Pavel Sharamet, the society must resist the campaign of political violence, which has started in Belarus again.

Two Young People Arrested For Leaflets

Police department of Soviet district of Minsk is getting ready institute proceedings against two young persons. Teenage Maxim Gromau and Katsyaryna Klimko were detained late at night on May 25, supposedly for handing out leaflets by Yakub Kolas Square. During detention Maxim Gromau was beaten up. Reports have been made on charges related to violations of Article 143 of the Administrative Code (insanitary conditions creation). Yesterday Maxim Gromau was checked by doctors, who registered beating and now he plans to submit protest for illegal actions of policemen to the Public Prosecutor’s office. But in the morning he and Katsyaryna Klimko were taken to the police department again. Young people were detained on his way to school. They have spent today night at the police department.
