Polish Sejm Speaker and Other Top Polish Politicians Support Belarusian Strikers
13:14, 17/06/2004

A number of well-known politicians have expressed their support to the persons on hunger strike in Belarus. Marshal of the Polish Sejm Józef Oleksy expressed his solidarity with the protesters in Belarus. “I can say positively that the demands of the hunger strikers are just. That is why I support them,” told Józef Oleksy to Radio Svaboda.

Secretary General of the party in power, Democratic Left Alliance, Marek Dyduch, also expressed solidarity with the Belarusian protesters, and told that the election code in Belarus should be changed.

“I was in Belarus last year and I think that the electoral code in this country is to be changed. There should be less centralization, and democratic standards during ballots counting should be provided for. By doing so the type of the Belarusian parliament is to be changed, as it would be a more democratic one. If the deputies are demanding these changes I support them entirely,” told the Secretary General of the Democratic Left Alliance.

Jan Rokita, Chairmen of parliamentary faction of Civic Platform, which is the most popular party in Poland at present, that won at the European Parliament elections recently, told that he sincerely supports the protesters, who struggle for democracy in Belarus.

“A great dream of every Pole is that times of freedom and triumph of law came to Belarus as soon as possible. I am sure that these times are approaching, and people who fight for them will realize that they have been fighting for a right cause, as the activists of “Solidarity” know it now. Because those who are persecuted now, whose newspapers are closed, but who are still fighting, struggling for a right for democratic elections, are doing a good thing not only for their own country, but for the whole Europe. I am completely solidary with them. With all my heart, all my thoughts I support fighters for freedom, democracy and civil rights in Belarus,” told Jan Rokita, one of the most probable candidates for prime-minister position to Radio Svaboda.
