The OSCE representatives believe that the situation in Belarus for carrying out open and democratic parliamentary elections this autumn has not been created. “I would not say that at the moment there is an atmosphere which could guarantee carrying out free and fair elections to the parliament,” told the head of the OSCE working group on Belarus Uta Zapf about the results of her three-days visit to Minsk.
Belarus is to a certain extent becoming a “model country” for European politicians. Today the Commissioner of the EU Chris Patten met the candidate to Serbia presidency Boris Tadic. On June 27 a second round of elections is to take place in Serbia. Tadic is to struggle for presidency with a ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party Tomislav Nikolic. Speaking of present political situation in Serbia, Chris Patten told that now Serbs are facing a clear choice “between joining the EU and Belarus,” told Radio Svaboda.
The OSCE working group on Belarus is deeply disappointed by the situation with human rights in Belarus. The OSCE delegation representatives have expressed concern because of the pressure of the Belarusian authorities on NGOs, freedom of expression violations and arrest of one of the Belarusian opposition leaders Mikhail Marynich.
“An agreement exists” that the president by his decree is to include representatives of political parties to the Central Election Committee in a consultative capacity, as it was in 2000. It was said during the statement on June 22 in the chamber of representatives, while discussing the question of amendments to the Election Code, told the CEC chairperson Lidziya Yarmoshyna.
On 22 of June at 10 am journalist of radio Liberty Yury Svirko came to building of government to get to session of “house of representatives”. He showed his admittance card with stamp of security service and license of registration issued by Foreign ministry. But when guard dressed in uniform of President security service saw logo of the radio he said that he won’t let the journalist come in. When Svirko turned on dictaphone and asked why he can’t come in the guardian taken it away. Than two people in civil grabbed the journalist and thrown him away from the building.
