Belarus’ first border troops commander dies 10:51, 06/07/2004
Yevgeny Bocharov, Belarus’ first border troops commander after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, was buried at the Vostochnoye cemetery in Minsk on July 5.
The general died on July 2 at the age of 56.
The funeral ceremony was attended by an official delegation of the State Border Troops Committee led by Chairman Aleksandr Pavlovsky, as well as Mecheslav Grib, former parliamentary speaker and associate of Mr. Bocharov in the 12th Supreme Soviet, politician Sergei Kalyakin and former Defense Minister Pavel Kozlovsky.
Mr. Bocharov was in charge of the State Border Troops Committee between 1992 and 1994 and played the key role in forming the border guard troops and drafting laws regarding the troops and the state border.
He earned 19 awards, including two Orders of Red Banner and a Red Star Order.
