US embassy disappointed, concerned over closure of Belarusian Party of Labor 12:57, 06/08/2004
The US embassy in Minsk has expressed “profound disappointment and concern” over the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Belarus to outlaw the Belarusian Party of Labor (BPL).
In its statement issued on Wednesday, the embassy urges Belarus to abide by its commitments as an OSCE member state.
“The liquidation of an established political party in Belarus is without precedent,” says the statement.
The embassy expresses doubt whether the parliamentary elections scheduled for October will be in accordance with OSCE standards, as has been repeatedly been declared by Belarusian government officials.
The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the BPL to be liquidated over alleged repeated violations of the Civil Code, such as misstatement of its legal address and membership.
BPL leader Aleksandr Bukhvostov decried the ruling as “undoubtedly, a political order.”
