Senator John McCain Barred From Belarus
12:09, 11/08/2004

Belarusian authorities refused to issue a visa to US Senator John McCain and four his colleagues. “I planned to lead a delegation of four U.S. Senators to Belarus, where we hoped to have several meetings, including one with the President. Because he feared that we might criticize his totalitarian rule, Mr. Lukashenko refused us visas, rejected our visit, and denied us entry into the country,” reads the official statement of Senator McCain received by press center of the Charter’97 yesterday. As the press center has found out from reliable sources, the decision to deny visa to American Senators had been made by Belarusian government in the beginning of August, that means before the EU ban from Greece for Belarusian sports and tourism minister Yuri Sivakov. “barring us entry is vivid testimony to President Lukashenko`s aversion to dialogue with freely elected officials,” believes Senator McCain. We offer for your attention the full text of American Senator’s statement, issued on President Lukashenko` s decision to bar U.S. Senators from Belarus:
