Respublika MPs Registered Their Initiative Groups 16:17, 16/08/2004

All six deputies of the chamber of representatives’ MPs’ group “Respublika”, Valery Fralou, Syarhey Skrabets, Uladzimir Parfyanovich, Uladzimir Reznikau, Ivan Pashkevich and Ihar Baslyk – have registered their initiative groups for nomination them as candidates at parliamentary elections. As General Fralou told the BelaPAN, they had no problems with registration of their initiative groups. 
95,000 Rubles Fine For Handing Out Newspapers 16:04, 16/08/2004

Alyaksey Shydlouski, one of Zubr coordinators, has been fined 95,000 rubles (about 45 dollars). This ruling has been made by an administrative commission of the Soviet district executive committee. Alyaksey Shydlouski was detained on July 6 for handing out leaflets with information about the protest on July 21 dedicated to the end of ten-year term of Lukashenka’s rule. It is worth mentioning that only 48 leaflets were seized. Every leaflet costs about 2,000 to Alyaksey. Dozens of Zubr activists have been detained and fined for dissemination of the same leaflets. All fines are to be returned from an aid fund for the victimized.

Sen. John McCain this week denounced the authoritarian government of Belarus for refusing to allow him to lead a congressional delegation to visit the country. The Belarusian Embassy replied that he would be welcomed after the elections in the former Soviet republic as well as the United States.

At the internet-site of the popular sports newspaper “Pressball” currently viewers are answering a question about their attitude towards the decision of the EU to ban the Belarusian sports minister from the Olympic Games in Athens. 1641 viewers have taken part in the poll. 23% of them, or 370 people, disapprove this decision strongly. Attitude of 55% (896 viewers) is “Very positive”. 12% of the site viewers (195) agreed with the variant “Yes, but at the same time it is not good”, and 11% (180) told that they are indifferent to that. According to the United civil Party press service, the refusals to register initiative groups of democratic candidates at autumn parliamentary elections continue. For instance, by ruling of the election committees the initiative groups of the following UCP candidates were refused to register: Veranika Bujkevich (Baranavichy), Hennadz Voranau (Polatsk), Zinaida Bandarenka (Smarhon), Svyatlana Karalyova (Minsk).

On Friday 13 the 24th Olympic Games started in Athens, Greece. More than 10,000 sportsmen from 202 countries are to take part in competitions. Belarus will be represented by 153 sportsmen in 23 sports. Belarusian athletes were given a task to win 25 medals. This year the Belarusian team stands out against a background of other countries’ teams because of a political scandal. The European Union banned Belarusian sports and tourism minister, ex-minister of internal affairs Yuri Sivakov from participation in the Olympics in Athens because of his alleged involvement in disappearances (murders) of Belarusian opposition leaders. The sports minister had to address Belarusian athletes with a broadcast appeal.
