EHU Closure Is “Purposeful Action Against Humanities Students”
18:07, 19/08/2004

It is an opinion of the Secretary General of the Russian PEN-Center Alexandr Tkachenko. In his interview to the BelaPAN agency on August 18 in Moscow he told: “The incident with the EHU (European Humanities University) shows that the authorities do not need “too intelligent”. They need manpower, which without philosophizing, simply and unpretentiously, would create surplus product. It means, you should not think, just accept as your due what you are told”. From that arises the slogan of the Belarusian authorities about “overproduction of humanities scholars, and necessity of mass schooling of engineers and other ‘technicians’, which are to ‘invent screw-nuts’”, told A.Tkachenko.
