Senator McCain Receives Marynich’s Sons
16:29, 23/08/2004

American Senator Johns McCain, who arrived to Riga with an official visit last weekend, received Ihar and Pavel, sons of the Belarusian prisoner of conscience, former foreign minister, ex-Ambassador of Belarus in Latvia Mikhail Marynich. Senator McCain expressed his solidarity with Mikhail Marynich and wished the brothers firmness and courage. “Mister Senator told us that he respects our struggle for father’s release from prison, and promised to render every possible assistance. He told that he would pray for us and our father,” told the elder son, Ihar Marynich, to the press center of the Charter’97.

“Many people in Belarus fight for freedom and democracy. Belarus should know that democratic forces support its energies to fight for liberty. We admire your courage and inner power,” added the Senator.

In addition to the meeting with the American politician, Ihar and Pavel have carried out a number of meetings in Riga, including the meeting with Latvian Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks.

The visit and meetings in Riga were organized by the American Embassy in Minsk and Foreign Ministry of Latvia. The sons expressed to them gratitude for help and support.

As we have informed, Senator McCain, one of the creators of the “Belarus Democracy Act”, was to visit Belarus the week before last. However, Belarusian authorities refused to issue visas to him and his colleagues. mmmmm
