UN delegation to visit jailed Ex-Belarus minister 14:48, 25/08/2004
The UN Commission on Human Rights` Working Group on Arbitrary Detention will visit the Belarusian State Security Committee`s (KGB) pretrial detention center where former Belarusian economics minister and ambassador to Latvia Mikhail Marinich is being held, Marinich`s lawyer Vera Stremkovskaya told Interfax on Tuesday.
A principled agreement on this issue has been reached with law enforcement agencies, and the UN delegation is expected to visit Marinich on August 25, Stremkovskaya said.
The ex-minister has been indicted for illegal possession of firearms. In addition, he is suspected of stealing government documents. Several requests by Marinich`s defense to release him before trial have been rejected.
While visiting Minsk, the members of the UN working group will have meetings with officials from Belarusian law enforcement agencies and visiting the country`s correctional facilities. mmmmm
