100m champion in hospital 12:02, 01/09/2004, Reuters
OLYMPIC 100m champion Yuliya Nesterenko has been taken to hospital after suffering stomach problems and stress, an official said today. "She felt unwell yesterday. She was taken to hospital," Anatoly Novitsky, head of the sports in the local administration in her home town of Brest in western Belarus, told Reuters. "The diagnosis is not clear. There are some problems with the stomach. I think nerves, change of climate and food and stress may have caused it."
The 25-year-old Nesterenko, made headlines this month when she became the first non-American since the 1980 Moscow Games, which the US boycotted, to win the women`s Olympic 100 metres title.
Nesterenko was given a hero`s welcome in her home town on the Polish border.
President Alexander Lukashenko awarded her the Order of the Fatherland.
Novitsky said Nesterenko would spend several days in hospital until she recovered completely.
