Tomorrow, on September 7 at 12 a.m. in the court of Lenin district of Hrodna (Dovator Street, 2/1) the judgment to the leader of the All-nation Strike Committee and member of the Coordinating committee of the European Coalition “Free Belarus” Valery Levaneuski and deputy chairman of the strike committee of the entrepreneurs Alyaksandar Vasilyeu is to be announced. They are charged with insult of honor and dignity of Alyaksandar Lukashenka. Levaneuski’s and Vasilyeu’s relatives address everybody, and first of all dwellers of Hrodna and Hrodna region, with an appeal to come to the court and express their support to the leaders of the entrepreneurs’ movement of Belarus. The relatives of the businessmen remind that in line with Belarusian Constitution, the court is open and public.
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami will pay an official visit to Belarus on September 9-11. As press secretary of the Belarusian FM Andrey Savinykh told at the briefing on Thursday, the program of the visit includes meetings of the Iranian president with Alyaksandar Lukashenka, Syarhei Sidorski, and the chairman of the house of representatives of the netional assembly Vadzim Papou and president of the National Academy of Science Mikhail Myasnikovich, the Ecopress agency informs.
The representative of the prosecution Eduard Panasiuk demanded a three-year term in colony for the chairman of the All-nation strike committee, member of the coordination committee of the European coalition “Free Belarus” Valery Levaneuski for defamation of honor and dignity of the president of Belarus. For the deputy chairman of the strike committee Alyaksandar Vasilyeu he demanded three years in colony for libel and for two years for organizing an unsanctioned meeting and demonstration in Hrodna on May 1. Because of absorption of less severe punishment by more severe, the prosecutor demands to sentence Vasilyeu to three years of colony.
Zubr movement continues to fight for political prisoners. New leaflets with the words: “Free Marynich!” were pasted in the center of Minsk by the activists of the movement. They have appeared in the Skaryna Avenue, Yanka Kupala Street, Varvashenya, Kazlou, Surhanau Streets. Dozens of new graffiti “Free Marynich!” have appeared in different parts of the city in the first days of September. They have emerged in the Kazlou, Pershamajskaya Streets, in the Sakyna Avenue, in the dormitory suburbs Kurasouschyna and Zakhad.
The judge hearing charges against Valery Levonevsky, leader of market vendors` strike committee in Grodno, and Aleksandr Vasilyev, deputy chairman of the strike committee, on September 3 decided not to examine defense witnesses. The judge announced that the testimony of the more than 10 witnesses for the prosecution would be enough to get onto the case, Mr. Levonevsky`s son, Vladimir, told BelaPAN.
Valery Levonevsky, leader of market vendors` strike committee in Grodno and a member of the Svabodnaya Belarus alliance, has decided to withdraw from the ongoing parliamentary race. According to Mr. Levonevsky`s son Vladimir, his father links the decision to his trial that began in a district court in Grodno on August 26.
Smolny College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Russia’s St. Petersburg has offered tuition discounts to up to 200 students displaced by the recent closure of European Humanities University (EHU). The former students of the Minsk-based school who will choose to complete their education at Smolny College will have to pay $1000 annually, whereas the full fee for Russians currently is $2,600, Lyudmila Zhulego of the EHU International Relations Department told BelaPAN.
The Belarusian branch of the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews (USCJ) is preparing documents to appeal against the Belarusian foreign ministry’s decision to deny it re-registration, Artur Livshits, a lawyer with the branch, told BelaPAN.
