US colleges, universities admit 19 students of closed European Humanities University 13:24, 22/09/2004
A total of 19 students of the closed European Humanities University (EHU) have been admitted to more than a dozen colleges and universities in the United States, according to the web news source newsise.com.
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania has decided to enroll two EHU students. “These were students who without a home and we thought it the right thing to do,” said Jim Bock, dean of admissions. “We are glad we can be part of the solution while also promoting cross-cultural understanding and the study of the liberal arts.”
Anastasiya Gerasimovich and Yuliya Savitskaya, who arrived on campus less than two weeks ago, both had completed three years at EHU before it was shut down by the education ministry’s July 27 directive. “There’s no way we can continue our education back home,” Ms. Savitskaya noted.
The Belarusian students are supported at Swarthmore College by assistance from the US State Department and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project is administered by the Washington, D.C.-based American Councils for International Education.
Earlier this month, the German government decided to provide EUR125,000 for the education of 24 fifth-year EHU students at Viadriana European University located in Frankfurt/Oder. In addition, higher educational institutions in Poland, Bulgaria and Russia`s St. Petersburg also expressed readiness to admit EHU students.
In particular, Poland`s Institute of Philosophy and Sociology affiliated to the Academy of Sciences offered 15 postgraduate slots in its sociology program with all instruction provided in English.
The American University in Bulgaria was ready to admit up to 100 students for the spring term.
