"Regionalnaya Gazeta" Issuing Stopped By Authorities 11:05, 29/09/2004
The work of the “Regionalnaya Gazeta" has been halted for three months by the authorities. “The Regionalnaya Gazeta” is an independent newspaper, which covers events in Madadzechna, Vilejka, Miadzel, Valozhyn, Astravets and Smarhon regions. It has a circulation of about 10,000 copies, it is published in Belarusian, and it is completely self-supporting. “It is a politically motivated decision, taken before the referendum and elections. Even the formal explanation is wet,” commented the editor-in-chief Alyaksandar Mantsevich.
The Information Ministry has found two reasons for halting the “Regionalnaya Gazeta” issuing. Firstly, the newspaper is registered as a national one, but it is sold only in Maladzechna district. Secondly, the insert with TV schedule is smaller than the newspaper itself.
Aliaksandar Mantsevich explains that the newspaper has subscribers outside Maladzechna region as well, and changing the size of the insert is a widespread event among many state newspapers.
The arguments of the editor-in-chief were left unnoticed, Radio Svaboda informs.
