German Bundestag to approve of the resolution on Belarus project 15:22, 01/10/2004
In Berlin, in the evening of September 30, at a Bundestag regular plenary session, german deputies adopted the resolution project devised by representatives of the incumbent social-democratic fraction. The resolution comprises a range of demand of german politicians to their federal Government concerning support for democratic processes in Belarus. It is a matter of ensuring transparent and free parliamentary election, ceasing pressure on the opposition, public organizations and independent Mass Media in the country, as Radio “Liberty” reports.
The document of the “red-green” is deprived of any concrete suggestions and policies for achieving such goals, unlike another resolution project by the oppositional fraction CDU/CSU, german observers deem. The project by the german opposition contains specific propositions. For example, they dwell on the belarusian-german cooperation on the civil society level, visa sanctions towards Belarusian persons of high rank, freeze of their accounts in foreign banks, etc. Nevertheless, a milder and more general social-democratic variant was adopted.
Social-democrat Utta Tsapf explains the reasons:
“The Christian Democrats’ propositions are new steps in real belarusian-german policy. These steps should be done, however, with taking into consideration concrete results of the oncoming parliamentarian election. After October 17, at a Bundestag regular plenary session, the parliamentarian fractions will devise a common policy towards Minsk, regarding the actual situation in Belarus”, - said Utta Tsapf.
