Prominent opposition figures urge military, law enforcement officers to abide by law ahead of elections 13:12, 01/10/2004
Prominent generals turned politicians and other opposition figures have called on the judiciary, military and law enforcement officers to strictly abide by the constitution and laws in the run-up to the elections and referendum.
In their appeal, the politicians express misgivings that the authorities would attempt to enlist the service of law enforcement agencies for pressurizing "those who are certain that the current government`s policies are leading the nation to a disaster, depriving our children and grandchildren of the future." "The opponents of the regime want just one thing - to build a democratic and prosperous Belarus for our children and grandchildren," the appeal reads.
"By ensuring the strict abidance by the constitution and laws, we will manage to create conditions under which the Belarusian people will elect its leader and a path of its development in a democratic manner."
The appeal carries the signatures of General Mechislav Grib, a former parliamentary speaker; Colonel Oleg Ignatenko, an ex-head of the Main Department of the Presidential Control Service; Lyudmila Karpenko, head of the German-based Office of the Public Prosecutor for Belarus; General Pavel Kozlovsky, a former minister of defense; former MP General Valery Pavlov; and General Valery Frolov, a current member of the National Assembly`s House of Representatives.
