Liberal youths across Europe to stage peaceful protests against Lukashenko`s referendum 17:32, 15/10/2004
LYMEC, the European Liberal youth organization, has launched a series of demonstrations across Europe against Aleksandr Lukashenko`s proposal to lift the presidential term limit. The campaign was initiated by Russia`s Yabloko party during late September`s Liberal youth forum in Tallinn, with LYMEC serving as the coordinator, Vice President Pietro Paganini told BelaPAN.
On Thursday, Yabloko staged a demonstration outside the Belarusian embassy in Moscow to show support for the Belarusian opposition. Similar protests were expected to take place in Budapest on Friday, in Stockholm on Saturday and in seven cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Oslo, Tallinn, Vilnius and Warsaw, on Sunday, the polling day.
Mr. Paganini assured that the demonstrations, aimed against dictatorship, would be peaceful as their participants oppose aggression striving to promote freedom.
He said that although LYMEC itself cannot change the situation, it can encourage the European Union to take decisive measures with respect to Belarus.
Such measures, according to Mr. Paganini, could be offering Belarus freedom of movement and trade.
He stressed that EU sanctions should be aimed at promoting contacts with Belarus, not isolating the nation.
He also spoke for admitting Belarusian students to European universities.
