Minsk-based diplomats representing several foreign countries obtained accreditation to monitor Sunday`s referendum and parliamentary elections. The observer status was granted to representatives of the embassies of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the United States, as well as China and North Korea.
US Ambassador George Krol was among the diplomats expected to take part in monitoring the vote.
Observers delegated by diplomatic missions vary in number between one and eight, with most embassies assigning three officers to monitor the poll.
In addition, observation missions were deployed by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the CIS countries. A group of independent Belarusian observers also were granted accreditation.
