U.S. citizen detained in Belarus 13:23, 19/10/2004, Interfax-West
A U.S. citizen has been detained in Belarus on fraud charges and placed in the State Security Committee`s pre-trial detention facility, State Security Committee chief Leonid Yerin said. Yerin made this announcement at a meeting with Pavel Severintsev, a Belarussian opposition leader, on Monday evening.
The detained U.S. citizen "is a UNDP [UN Development Program] expert who was responsible for financing various programs, including information ones. He has misappropriated some of the funds entrusted to him," the Belarussian official said.
A report issued by the State Security Committee suggests that the U.S. citizen was involved in fraud against Belarus`s VELCOM cell-phone provider.
He was detained on October 16, Yerin said. U.S. diplomats were informed of the detention and they have already met with the man, he said.
