The Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU) has expressed protest against the jailing of prominent opposition politician Nikolai Statkevich.
Mr. Statkevich, leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party “Narodnaya Hramada” (BSDP), on October 20 was sentenced to 10 days in jail for taking part in Tuesday’s demonstration against the official results of last week’s parliamentary elections and referendum.
In its letter sent to the BSDP headquarters, the Ukrainian party, led by Oleksandr Moroz, says it supports the BSDP’s efforts aimed at democratizing Belarus, BSDP Deputy Chairman Vladimir Nistyuk told BelaPAN. “We bow to your courage and hope that Nikolai will be released,” the letter reads.
The Democratic Party of Moldova, one of that country’s largest political forces, also has expressed solidarity with the jailed Belarusian oppositionist.
