Opposition youth leader Pavel Severinets was released from the detention center on Okrestina Street on November 3 after serving out his jail term. The activist was sentenced to 15 days in jail over an October 19 demonstration staged by opposition forces in the wake of the October 12-17 parliamentary elections and referendum.

Lukashenka "Doesn’t Care" About US Elections Results

“I am almost indifferent to the results of the presidential elections in the USA, and they would not affect our relations much,” underlined Alyaksandar Lukashenka in his interview to journalists on Thursday. “We are open people. We are ready to cooperate with the Americans, and today the ball is in the court of the US. If they want to cooperate with the state in the center of Europe, they are welcome; we have no objections to that. But we do not want them to thrust their values on us, as well as presidential elections according to their standards, which is unacceptable for us,” told Belarusian President. In this connection A. Lukashenka stated: “Just imagine we had carried out elections in a way they were electing their president in the US. Perhaps we could have been crushed by tanks already”. The president told that his attitude towards the presidential elections in the US is calm. “The result is not a surprise for me, it was predictable,” added Lukashenka.

Belarusian Customs Almost Sent Polish Sejm MP’s Car For Dismantling

The customs employees wanted to dismantle the car belonging to the MP of Polish Parliament Barbara Kudrycka, informs the Belarusian Popular Front press service. In that car Chairman of the BPF Party Vintsuk Vyachorka and Honourable Chairman of the Association of Belarusian Poles Tadeusz Gavin headed to Bielostock on the invitation of the deputy of Polish Sejm to participate in a conference dedicated to situation in Belarus. She sent a car to Belarus to bring them for their convenience.

Three million rubles from the newspaper “Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta” and 500 thousand rubles from the journalist Syarhei Satsuk were to be collected in behalf of art director of the theatre “Christophor” Yawhen Kryzhanowski. This judgment was pronounced by the court of October district of Minsk on November 2, after considering a action for libel of Y. Kryzhanowski. Initially Kryzhanowski wanted to receive 100 million rubles from the newspaper, and 20 millions from the journalist. The editorial office is going to challenge the decision, the BAJ press service informs.

Two More Hrodna Journalists Convicted For Picket

Judge Viktoryja Kulakowskaya found the journalists guilty of violating Article 167-1 of the Administrative Code (violation of the order of carrying out or organizing assemblies, meetings, street rallies, pickets, etc.).

Opposition activist Novikova fears she may be accused of using fake passport

Opposition activist Oksana Novikova told BelaPAN on Tuesday that she might be accused of using a fake passport. According to her, on October 30, she was questioned by Yury Kolesnikov, deputy chief of the passport and visa office of Minsk`s Sovetsky district police department. “He told me that some years ago his office issued a passport to a woman, but the passport bore a photograph of another woman strongly resembling me. Mr. Kolesnikov asked if I knew something about the holder of the passport and the woman depicted on it," Ms. Novikova said.

Man gets death sentence for brutal murder of four in Polotsk

A panel of the Vitebsk Regional Court has imposed a death sentence on an unemployed man, finding him guilty of murdering four people in the northern city of Polotsk. The man, who has a history of previous convictions, chopped and stabbed four persons to death during a home invasion this past February, Yury Azaryonok, spokesman for the Prosecutor General’s Office, told BelaPAN.

Signature collection campaign launched for opening school for Gypsies

A signature collection campaign has launched in Belarus to press the authorities to give their permission for opening the country`s first school for Gypsy children. In early September, the Belarus Section of the International Human Rights Society petitioned Education Minister Aleksandr Radkov and Presidential Administration head Ural Latypov to sanction the opening of such a school in Kolodishchi, a town near Minsk where some 800 Gypsies reside. Eighty children would study at the school and all instruction would be provided in Romany.

Former Bruin Zholtok dies

Former Nashville Predators center Sergei Zholtok died yesterday in his native Latvia of an apparent heart ailment. He was 31. The Predators` website said Zholtok, who was drafted by the Bruins in 1992 and played in Boston from 1992-94, died while playing for the Riga 2000 team this year during the NHL lockout. TSN.ca reported that Zholtok excused himself from a game in Belarus and collapsed and died on the way to the locker room. Zholtok appeared in 588 NHL games from 1992-2004 with Boston, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Minnesota, and Nashville.
