Belarusian Popular Front to observe 83rd anniversary of Slutsk anti-Bolshevik uprising 11:28, 17/11/2004
The Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) plans to hold a series of commemorative events on November 26 and 27 to mark the 83rd anniversary of the 1920 Slutsk Anti-Bolshevik Uprising, BPF spokesman Yury Zenkovich told BelaPAN on Tuesday.
The BPF will hold a party at its Minsk office on the first day and organize a bus trip to the village of Krasnaya Sloboda, where the bloodiest battle took place between the rebels and the Bolsheviks’ 27th Omsk Division, and other battle scenes the following day, according to Mr. Zenkovich.
However, he noted, neither a rally nor a concert will be held in Slutsk because of “the local authorities’ stance.”
This year`s commemorative events are organized by the Front`s newly formed youth commission, Mr. Zenkovich said, adding that the BPF would officially announce the establishment of the commission following the events.
The Slutsk uprising broke out on November 1, 1920. Appeals by the government of the Belarusian National Republic to the Western Powers and the United States for military aid met with no response. The Soviet government, faced with a mass revolt in Belarus, signed an armistice with Poland to free its hands for more effective suppression. The armistice allowed the Soviet government to transfer units from the Polish front and use them against the rebels. As a result, the uprising was suppressed by the end of December 1920.
