Ukraine Presidential Election Results Disputed 13:43, 22/11/2004, By VOA News
Tens of thousands of opposition supporters have rallied in the main square of Ukraine`s capital to protest what they say is fraud in Sunday`s run-off presidential election.
The demonstrators back pro-Western candidate Viktor Yuschenko, who trails Moscow-favored Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich with more than 98 percent of the ballot`s counted.
The election commission in Kiev says the prime minister was named on nearly 50 percent of the ballots, compared to nearly 47 percent for Mr. Yuschenko -- an almost insurmountable lead. However, exit polls had indicated the opposition candidate held a substantial lead over Mr. Yanukovich.
Mr. Yuschenko says one region showed an improbable voter turnout of 96 percent, and that voters were bused to different polling places to cast more than one vote.
International election monitors also reported widespread voting irregularities.
