Zmitser Bandarenka`s Arm Seriously Injured 18:50, 26/11/2004

Coordinator of the civil initiative Charter’97 Zmitser Bandarenka turned to one of Minsk hospitals. The X-ray photography and doctor’s check-up showed an elbow joint dislocation and a rupture of joint capsule. As more than a day has passed after the injury, the doctors told that an operation is necessary. However, first under general anesthesia the dislocated joint was set, and the doctor cased the limb in plaster. If it helps, the operation would not be necessary. As we have informed, the coordinator of the civil initiative Charter’97 Zmitser Bandarenka, Zubr coordinator Uladzimer Kobets, one of the leaders of the European coalition “Free Belarus” Zmitser Barodka and the Zubr press secretary Alyaksandr Atroschankaw were detained at the Ukrainian-Belarusian border on the night of November 24th/25th by Ukrainian law-enforcing agencies. They were on their way home from Kyiv, where they took part in the rallies in support of Viktor Yushchenko. Brute force was used against them during the apprehension.

The day before yesterday one of the coordinators of the European coalition “Free Belarus” Zmitser Barodka (Barysaw) had a meeting with a world-famous heavyweight boxer, Volodymyr Klichko. The Ukrainian athlete had arrived to Kyiv to back the victory of the democratic candidate Viktor Yushchenko. As the Charter’97 press center was informed by Zmitser Barodka, who, by the way, is a former boxer himself, Volodymyr Klichko had found time and asked the Belarusians about the situation in their country. V. Klichko wished to gain a victory of democracy in our country.

Natalya Petkevich, formerly the head of state’s press secretary, was appointed as deputy head of the Presidential Administration by Aleksandr Lukashenko’s November 25 edict, the Belarusian leader`s press office said. Ms. Petkevich is reported to have been assigned to supervise work to improve the legislative basis of the country, coordinate the activities of the presidential legal agencies and the judiciary, and maintain contacts with the legislature.

On November 25 the Belarusians in Belgium took part in the rally of Ukrainian Diaspora of Europe. The Ukrainians gathered from many countries to express their support of Viktor Yushchenko, who won the presidential elections in Ukraine. The rally took place in the capital of the united Europe, Brussels, that is why the representatives of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe were present in the meeting. During the rally the slogans were chanted: “Yushchenko!”, “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to heroes!”, and other slogans. The words of indignation and protest were addressed to Leonid Kuchma and Russia. About 2,000 partticipants took part in the rally.
