Belarus keen on expanding trade with Iran
15:15, 27/12/2004, IranMania.com

Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov in a meeting in Minsk Friday with the new Iranian Ambassador Abolmajid Fekri called for the expansion of bilateral relations in various fields, IRNA said. At the meeting in which Fekri also presented a copy of his credentials, Martynov said the two nations enjoy cordial ties. "The September visit by President Mohammad Khatami (to Belarusia) was a turning point in expansion of bilateral economic and political ties," he underlined.

He further said that given the numerous common grounds and similar positions on a range of issues between the two nations, they can build closer cooperation in the future.

Fekri said that he is hopeful he is will be able to carry out his duties in an exemplary manner and pave the way for further bolstering relations between Tehran and Minsk.

Iran and Belarus established diplomatic relations in 1993. Belarus set up its embassy in Tehran in 1997 while Iran opened an embassy in Minsk 2001.

Synthetic fibers, fertilizers, polymers and electronic circuits are among items exported by Belarus to Iran. In return, Iran exports foodstuff, plastic ware and pharmaceuticals to Minsk.

Among the other joint industrial and commercial activities, the two countries are building productions lines for Belarus MAZ trucks and tractors in Iran and joint investments of the two countries in the construction of a luxurious hotel and a sports complex in Minsk.

The Republic of Belarus and Iran in September signed six cooperation documents in the presence of the two countries` presidents.

Cooperation between Iran and Belarus in customs, security, culture, agriculture and natural disasters are included in the documents.

Belarus president and Khatami signed a statement outlining the principles of mutual relations.
