US State Department Declares Anti-Semitism Rise in Belarus

The U.S. Department of State has submitted the report to the Congress on anti-Semitic sentiment in the world, MIGnews informs. It is underlined in the report that the growth of the number of immigrants from Muslim countries in Western Europe, many of which are of little education and poor, contribute significantly to the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe. At the same time, the authors of the report emphasize that far-right radicals are responsible for most attacks on in Europe. A special place in the report is dedicated to anti-Semitic activities in Russia, Belarus and other countries of the former USSR.

Three activists of “Zubr” movement detained in Horki (Mahiliou region) for distributing newspapers. Maksim Dvaretsky, Yauhen Suvorau and Dzianis Kryvanosau were handing out newspaper “Vybar” in Belarusian state Agricultural Academy. The newspaper contains information about the most crying falsifications during recent referendum and parliament elections. The young people have been kept in Horky police department for two hours already.

Five years of imprisonment and confiscation of property – this sentence of the Belarusian court was passed upon one of the leaders of political opposition of Belarus, former Belarusian Ambassador to Latvia Mikhail Marynich. The charge was trumped-up, but in the country of dictator Lukashenka the ruling was bound to be a verdict of “guilty”, and such a sentence has been passed. This event has not been left unnoticed in Latvia. The Latvian Transatlantic Organization LATO and non-governmental organization “Open Belarus” held a picket protesting against trial over Mikhail Marynich. The mock of the trial was publicly condemned by Latvian President Vaira Vîíe-Freiberga and Prime Minister Aigars Kalvîtis.

Finance Minister Korbut wins libel case against private sports newspaper

Finance Minister Nikolai Korbut on Tuesday won 40 million rubels ($18,430) in damages from the private sports newspaper Pressbol and its chief editor over what the official called a libelous front-page headline. Judge Valery Yesman of Minsk’s Tsentralny District Court ruled that the official should receive 30 million rubels from the paper and 10 million from Editor-in-Chief Vladimir Berezhkov.

The sentence in the case of Mikhail Marynich was condemned by the member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Christos Pourgourides, who was the author of the report on disappeared politicians in Belarus, Radio Svaboda informs. The parliamentarian notes that he was shocked and saddened by this decision. “It is understandable that Lukashenka’s regime is coming to show true colors to the world. I hope very much that after this ruling the international community would understand that if serious actions against this regime are not taken, and it is not made to give up the power, the events in Belarus are to get worse and worse with every month. This is a tragic objective law by which I am very disappointed, and I hope that the international community would react determinedly to this ruling”.
