Bruce Jackson: "Belarus Has Freedom of Choice"
17:57, 10/01/2005

For many countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States the year 2004 has become the year of elections. The outcomes of the presidential elections in Russia, of the parliamentary elections in Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus and Uzbekistan have been actively discussed both by local experts and international analysts. “The Voice of America” has asked Bruce Jackson, the founder and head of the NGO “Project on transitional democracies”, President of the US Committee for NATO, to comment on the recent events in Ukraine and their effect on the situation in the region. “Russia does not have veto power to decide which way peoples of Belarus, Kazakhstan, the Central Asia and Transcaucasia are to go. This opinion is not a prejudice against Russia and is not pointed against it; it is just a fact how modern states are behaving in the world politics,” believes Bruce Jackson. “The most important thing for Belarus is to know that it has a freedom of choice, which Western institutions to join, and what is better for it, either to reinforce cooperation with the European Union or trade with the CIS countries. The right to decide it belongs to Belarus alone. Those people who are saying that they cannot make a decision since the Kremlin would be against it, are themselves willingly getting into a kind of a trap, as a Polish writer Czes³aw Mi³osz wrote in his book “Captured Thoughts” (Zniewolony umys³). To be a European means to understand that you have a freedom of choice”.
