Committee for State Security (KGB) and Alfa anti-terrorist unit officers in Minsk on February 4 arrested six members of a Russian gang, which smuggled precious stones into Belarus, said the press office of the KGB Minsk and Minsk Region Department.
The smugglers, one of them is a Russian police lieutenant colonel, were apprehended while trying to sell a ruby for $9,000 to a disguised KGB agent who identified himself as a buyer. The KGB officers seized 12 precious stones estimated by experts at $400,000.
Valentina Zelenkevich, spokesperson for the KGB department, said that gangsters came to Minsk to find regular customers for precious stones. They promised to bring diamonds if the first deal were a success.
The gang members have been charged with dealing in precious stones illegally. If convicted, they would face between five and twelve years in prison.
