Natalya Podolskaya of Belarus to represent Russia at Eurovision 11:08, 01/03/2005
Natalya Podolskaya of Belarus was chosen on February 25 to represent Russia in this year’s Eurovision song contest.
The Belarusian pop singer beat other eight contenders in an interactive vote in a qualifying final run by Russia’s First Channel.
Last year Ms. Podolskaya bid to represent Belarus in the Eurovision contest in Turkey. The public vote in a show on the BT television channel placed her second after duo Aleksandra and Konstantin, according to the Belarusian State Television and Radio Company. However, Beltelecom posted different results on its website, which ranked Ms. Podolskaya first.
Aleksandra and Konstantin were ultimately picked up as Belarus` Eurovision contestant following the Belarusian leader`s approval, but the duo failed to make it through the contest’s semifinal.
Ms. Podolskaya was then offered to travel to Turkey as the duo’s backup, but she refused.
The 2005 Eurovision contest is scheduled to take place in Kyiv on May 21.
Belarus will be represented by Anzhelika Agurbash.
