Belarus’ Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal filed by former dissident lawmaker Sergei Skrebets against ballot access denial.
Earlier this month, Mr. Skrebets was denied registration as parliamentary candidate in a repeat election in Grodno`s Tsentralny district. The vote, which is to fill the only vacant seat in the House of Representatives, is scheduled for March 20.
The politician was removed from the race after 81 medical students withdrew their signatures in support of his ballot access request.
In court, Mr. Skrebets said that all three group requests to annul the signatures were written by the same person, while Galina Mkrtchyan, a representative of the central election commission, argued that the politician would have fallen short of the required 1,000 signatures even if the students had been counted in.
Judge Galina Zhukovskaya turned down the politician’s request to examine students as witnesses.
