Since March 3 Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Marynich has been asking the administration of the colony number 8 to allow him to take an antihypertensive drug which he had taken with him. However the administration referring to the absence of the medical information card had not allowed him to take medicine, and had not provided necessary medical help to the 65-year-old politician, his lawyer Valyantsina Shykhantsova told to the press center of the Charter’97. On March 7 an acute cerebrovascular accident, or a stroke, was diagnosed. Thus it is possible to say that the administration of the colony is responsible for deterioration of the state of health of Mikhail Marynich.

Latvians Concerned Over Health Condition Of Mikhail Marynich

The Latvian non-governmental organization “Open Belarus” urges the authorities of Belarus to provide Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Marynich with proper medical help, the Latvian news agency LETA informs. The chairman of the Open Belarus board Peteris Vinkelis also demanded the government to inform the family of Mikhail Marynich about his health status promptly and in detail.

The prisoner of conscience Mikhail Marynich who is serving term in a colony, has had a stroke. At the moment former Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belarus Mikhail Marynich is placed to a medical unit of the colony number 8 in Vorsha. The head of the colony Anatoly Lukashevich Admitted in his conversation with Pavel Marynich that several days before Mikhail Marynich had a stroke. However the son was denied a meeting. The son of the political prisoner is set to press for placing his father in one of the hospitals in Minsk and a full medical check-up, as the stroke cannot be cured in a colony! Often one may hear a phrase: “Who could be instead of Lukashenka?” But people should not forget about the fate of the vice-speaker of the Supreme Soviet Henadz Karpenka, who suddenly died of a stroke in the age of 50, about former vice-prime Minister Viktor Hanchar and former Interior Minister General Yuri Zakharanka. Today one of the most probable candidates for presidency in Belarus, Mikhail Marynich is being destroyed. Relatives and friends of Mikhail Marynich call upon all people of good will to come to the October Square of Minsk at 6 p.m. to demand the immediate release of Mikhail Marynich. A danger overhangs his life.

European Parliament Urges to Release Mikhail Marynich

The head of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Belarus Bogdan Klich and his deputy Aldis Kuskis urged the Belarusian authorities to release the Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Marynich and provide him with appropriate medical treatment, says the press-release by Aldis Kuskis office.

Hrodna Traders Fined

On March 10 the family of the Hrodna vendors who were detained during the meeting in Zhyliber Park. Ludmila Tsezhyna, Ivan Mel’nichak, Vital Dzetchyk, Natallya Ivashka, Halina Vishneuskaya, Zmitser Krautsevich, Aleh Siamashka were sentenced to a fine of 20 basic units by the Court of Lenin District of Hrodna for violation of the Article 167 Part 1 for participation in an unsanctioned meeting.

Mr. Yushchenko reminded that his country is a country where “tens of journalists sacrifices their lives for writing the truth,” and Heorhiy Gongadze, alleged assassins of whom were detained recently, was one of them.

The state of health of the political prisoner Mikhail Marynich is still worrying. Several days ago former Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belarus was transferred from remand prison of Minsk executive committee Interior Affairs department to a medium-security colony ?8 in Vorsha, which is considered one of the worst in the country. Just a few days after Mikhail Marynich have a microstroke. The left part of his face is paralyzed, one leg is functioning badly, his speech is delayed. Marynich does not remember why deep scratches had appeared on his wrists.

Information Ministry Increases Control of Mass Media

The new department that will deal with control of the activity of electonic mass media, has been established at the Ministry of Information. The media to be controlled include FM radio stations, regional TV and radio complainies. The chair of the board is the vice-minister of information Siarhei Bulatski. The first step of the new board of electronic mass media became the list of the authors and singers which was composed in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice. According to the authors of the list the persons who were included in it could be considered Belarusians. Some of them consider Russia to be their homeland. It concerns the bands Bi-2 and Nochnye Snaipery (Night Snipers) and such singers as Yury Antonov, Aliona Sviridova and Igor Korneliuk. The composer Eduard Khanok directly states that he doesn’t want to have any relation to Belarus.

Mikhail Marynich Had Microstroke

Mikhail Marynich, a political prisoner who serves the term in the medium security colony #8 in Vorsha, has had a microstroke today. Pavel Marynich, the son of the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belarus, former Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, told about it to the press center of the Charter’97. The authorities are still trying to conceal this.

Leader of Polatsk Entrepreneurs Valery Shauchenka Is Fined

On 10 March the court of Polatsk and Polatsk district considered that administrative case against Valery Shauchenka, vice-chair of Polatsk regional organization of Belarusian Independent Trade Union and leader of Polatsk entrepreneurs. The case was brought as a result of the report that was composed by the police. There V. Shauchenka was accused in the participation in the unauthorized meetings on 1-2 March in Polatsk. More than 80 local entrepreneurs came to support their colleague. Judge Natallia Abramava found Shauchenka guilty in violation of part 1 of Article #167.1 of the Code of Administrative Violations and fined him about $400.

European Parliament Officially Recognized Lukashenka Dictator

The European Parliament (EP) on Thursday passed a strong-worded resolution blasting Aleksandr Lukashenko’s government and demanding the immediate release of several activists whom it called political prisoners. In particular, the resolution calls for recognizing the current Belarusian regime as a dictatorship and Mr. Lukashenko a dictator, and “identifying and freezing the personal assets of President Lukashenko and those other senior members of the regime who ensure the continuation of the dictatorship.” The European Parliament also strongly urges the authorities to release Mikhail Marinich, Valery Levonevsky, Aleksandr Vasilyev and other persons whom it describes “imprisoned political opponents of the regime.” The resolution calls for an independent inquiry into the 1999-2000 disappearances of Mr. Lukashenko’s several opponents. The 24-point document condemns the Belarusian government’s crackdown on independent reporters, media outlets, oppositionists and human rights advocates. We offer you the full text of the document:
