Latvian authorities seize dual-purpose shipment from Belarus 11:24, 24/03/2005
Latvian authorities seized what they called dual-purpose equipment worth $1.5 million on its way from Belarus to Angola for transit rules violations.
The SRS Kurzemsk department announced the seizure order on March 22, Agnese Grinbergi of the Latvian State Revenue Service (SRS) told BelaPAN.
The shipment, which, according to the accompanying documents, consists of four tractors with semi-trailers, was stopped at the Ventspils seaport on March 9.
Upon examining the equipment, Latvian experts confirmed that the tractors might be used for carrying tanks and other hardware.
The Belarusian consignor produced no transit license, which is required for transporting military-purpose goods.
Ms. Grinbergi said that the SRS imposed a fine of 6,000 lats (about $3,180) on the shipment agent, Nortop Ventspils.
Aleksandr Shlarko, head of the company, intends to appeal the seizure within ten days. Mr. Shlarko declined to comment on the incident to BelaPAN.
