Lukashenko-proposed amnesty would apply to more than 7,000 people, interior minister says 16:38, 08/04/2005
More than 7,000 people would be eligible to amnesty under the bill proposed by Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko, Interior Minister Vladimir Naumov said at a meeting with professors and students at Belarusian State University (BGU) on Thursday.
The bill is on the agenda of the House of Representative’s spring session.
It would pardon war veterans, retirement-age people, women, the disabled and legal minors on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the USSR’s victory over Nazi Germany in the 1941-45 Great Patriotic War.
It would also apply to those sentenced to up to six years in prison who have served one third of their term; and those convicted of embezzlement provided they have served one third of their term and compensated for the damage.
Those who have a good disciplinary record would have their sentences reduced by one year. The amnesty would not apply to those who had committed crimes before or those who relapsed into crime after being amnestied.
