Poll: More than half of Belarusians sympathize with small market vendors in their demands 12:58, 11/04/2005
Almost 55 percent of Belarusians supported the demands of small market vendors who staged strikes earlier this year against the requirement that they should pay value-added tax on imports from Russia, suggests a survey by the Minsk-based Independent Institute for Social, Economic and Political Studies (IISEPS).
The survey, which polled 1,516 people aged 18 and above across the country in March, reportedly showed that 87.2 percent had heard of the strikes and 12.8 percent had not.
The survey also showed that Belarusians rather frequently go to small private retailers, the IISEPS notes. In particular, 57.3 percent said that they did this every day or several times a week, with 31.5 percent several times a month and 5.3 percent several times a year. Six percent said that they did not use small private vendors` services. The IISEPS says that broad public support for market vendors` demands made the government look for a compromise.
