Democratic union members allowed to demonstrate close to busy street 15:28, 13/04/2005
The city police in Minsk allowed the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BCDTU) to stage a demonstration close to busy Vaneyeva Street on April 13, not in the remote 50th October Anniversary Park designated by the city authorities earlier.
The BCDTU planed two demonstrations in Minsk on April 13 to protest against a controversial cabinet directive that evened the First-Class Worker Rate with the Subsistence Minimum Budget, curbing wage increases.
The Minsk city government granted demonstration permits for Bangalore Square and the 50th October Anniversary Park.
Dissatisfied with the latter location, BCDTU leader Aleksandr Yaroshuk persuaded the police to allow the union to post its activists closer to nearby Vaneyeva Street.
“It made little sense to demonstrate in the woods,” he noted in an interview with BelaPAN.
