Independent Laboratory for Research of Radioactivity Proposes to Establish Laboratory for Bandazheuski :: Charter'97 :: News

At the international scientific symposium in France CRIIRAD stated its proposal to Belarusian authorities to establish a scientific laboratory for the political prisoner Iury Bandazheuski so that he could continue his research in radiation medicine.

Halina Bandazheuskaia:

-- It is a way to support my husband spiritually and physically, so that he would feel he is in demand and that his mind and knowledge in this field would be useful for people.

Belarusian authorities haven’t reacted to this proposal yet, but CRIIRAD intends to take all measures possible to create the conditions for the professor’s work. Professor Bandazheuski treated the idea positively. According to Halina Bandazheuskaia, the laboratory would be of biological nature and would be established and financed by the French side:

-- There are two years ahead, we will see. I think that while it will be established the term of his release would come. I hope the laboratory would be established, it will be a good step for cooperation of France and Belarus. It is a good project and I hope it would be implemented.

Professor Bandazheuski studied the influence of radiation on human body for ten years. He wrote ten monographs on this topic and was awarded with Albert Schweitzer medal and Hippocrates gold medal. According to human rights activists, his research differed from the point of view of the official medicine, which became a reason for criminal persecution of the professor, who was sentenced to eight years of jail for bribery. At present Iury Bandazheuski lives in a colony settlement. The prison administration refused to release him early, though he had the right to it according to the law. In France there has been established a committee in defense of Iury Bandazheuski.
