Free Trade Union Leader Punished For Strike of Vendors 16:13, 14/04/2005
A fine of 20 basic units (510 thousand Belarusian rubles) was imposed on the chair of the Brest Oblast branch of the Free Trade Union Valyantsin Lazarenkau. Judge Ruslana Syanko found Mr. Lazarenkau guilty of unsanctioned meeting in the goods market of Brest during the strike of vendors on March 15.
Valyantsin Lazarenkau tried to explain that he had no connection to organizing the meeting, and had been invited by vendors to deliver a speech like a guest there. According to Lazarenkau, representatives of the authorities have been taking part in the meeting as well, however, none of them was brought to responsibility.
The leader of the Brest branch of the Free Trade Union considers that the ruling of the court is wrong and is going to challenge it, Radio Svaboda informs.
