Belarusian TV Haunted by Opposition Money 11:18, 18/04/2005
On the week end the Belarusian TV informed that the law enforcers had detained a courier delivering from Lithuania to Belarus a substantial sum in foreign currency for the support of the Belarusian opposition. According to the Belarusian TV, the delivery man had allegedly brought from Vilnius 200,000 USD to Minsk. They were allegedly intended for one of the leaders of the “Respublika”, former deputy of the” chamber of representatives” Syarhei Skrabets (Sergei Skrebets).
As said by the detained “dispatch”, the currency was received in the Lithuanian capital from an unknown person with secrecy measures. The money was illegally delivered to Belarus.
The law-enforcing agencies note that the currency was packed in new bank packages, and the banknotes were absolutely new, which could show the origin of the money. “Green packages are the money that just has been printed in the American mint”. This information was revealed on April 17 in the program “In the center of attention” of the First National TV channel.
It is not the first occasion of the kind. Previously the officials of different levels, including A. Lukashenka, informed about arrest of hundreds thousands dollars purportedly aimed for opposition support.
