Closed European Humanities University to reopen in Vilnius 11:07, 18/04/2005
The European Humanities University (EHU), which was based in Minsk and closed down by the Belarusian authorities in July 2004, will reopen in Vilnius on June 9, BNS reported.
According to the agency, a decision to that effect was made during an informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg on April 15 and 16.
Antanas Valionis, the Lithuanian foreign minister, noted alarming trends in Belarus and called for reopening the EHU, a non-government education institution, to promote European values to the academic circles in neighboring Belarus.
The Lithuanian government is looking for a suitable building to house the EHU.
BNS reports that Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas met with EHU Rector Anatoly Mikhailov on April 6 to discuss reopening the university in Lithuania with assistance from the European Union.
