Andrei Sannikov: Resolution of UN Commission Confirms Repressive Character of Belarusian Regime 14:09, 18/04/2005
“It is the third consecutive resolution adopted by the UN Commission on Human Rights, which means the absence of progress in the situation with human rights in Belarus. I think that the third repeated condemnation of the Belarusian regime in the sphere of human rights on the part of the most reputable international body in this sphere has finally confirmed the repressive character of the Belarusian regime and the necessity to take immediate action internationally to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus,” told Andrei Sannikov, a coordinator of the civil initiative “Charter’97”, member of the Council of Civil initiatives “Free Belarus”, commenting on adoption of the harsh resolution by the UN Commission on Human Rights condemning political situation in Belarus.
According to the human rights activist, it is important that the resolution maintains the office of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus. “One may hope that in his next report the Special Rapporteur would take into consideration all critical remarks on his report by Belarusian human rights activists and representatives of the civil society,” noted A. Sannikov.
As said by the Charter’97 coordinator, the most important fact is that the resolution has been supported by Ukrainian delegation. Thus Ukraine has demonstrated earnestness of its intentions to stick to international standards in the sphere of human rights, and accordingly, to move towards the European Union. “Unlike Ukraine, Russia, though publicly stating adherence to the principles of democracy, once again has confirmed that its position in support of Belarusian dictatorship is unalterable, and as a result was commended by the Belarusian dictator,” added the human rights activist.
