European Movement in Denmark Named Mikhail Marynich Person of the Year 16:43, 19/04/2005
The European movement of Denmark named the Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Marynich the Person of the Year, told Igor Marynich, the son of the political prisoners, leader of the civil initiative “Freedom to political prisoners!” to the Charter’97 press center. On April 16 he visited Copenhagen and took part in the congress of the European movement of Denmark.
As said by Igor Marynich, this case is the first for the whole period of the existence of the European movement in Denmark. Up to now only citizens of this country were awarded this honourable title. As the leaders of the movement explained, choosing Mikhail Marynich the Person of the Year shows serious concern both in Denmark and the European Union in general over the situation in Belarus.
Igor Marynich believes that choosing his father the Person of the Year means that any repressed Belarusian oppositionist could be considered one for the Europeans. “It is the award for the whole Belarusian civil society, the sign of solidarity and respect,” told the son of the political prisoner to the press center of the Charter’97.
After naming Mikhail Marynich the Person of the Year his son was given a special diploma and a European flag. The leader of the civil initiative “Freedom to political prisoners!” addressed the participants of the conference in Copenhagen with an address. “In my address I spoke about my father and events in Belarus, and how the authorities are afraid of this blue flag with yellow stars, with symbolizes an equal union of the European nations. I told that when unfurled in our country by protesters, it is snatched by policemen and special services and destroyed. I spoke how important the international support and solidarity are for people who are fighting the regime in our country. We, the Belarusians are the European nation, and we are to win freedom like our brothers in Ukraine and Georgia,” Igor Marynich said.
