Foreign minister considers presence of Severin as UN rapporteur in Belarus inappropriate 11:25, 19/04/2005
The Belarusian side considers that the presence of Adrian Severin as special rapporteur on Belarus of the UN Commission for Human Rights would be inappropriate, Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov told reporters in Minsk on Monday. The head of the FM underlined that the Belarusian side had seen its rightness after hearing the report on Belarus by Adrian Severin.
As Sergei Martynov said, “the report in Belarus was absolutely unprecedented”. Firstly, it had not responded to the requirements to the standards of the document’s preparation. In fact, it was a compilation of the report on Belarus by the USA State Department, Sergei Martynov added.
Dr. Severin, who was appointed in July 2004, has not visited Belarus since then because the country’s authorities denied him an entry visa.
Dr. Severin’s report, presented to the Commission in March, drew harsh criticism from the authorities.
He noted that Belarus has cooperated successfully with many bodies of the UN Commission for Human Rights.
