Belarus next? 11:14, 20/04/2005, The Richmond Times-Dispatch
Buoyed by bloodless revolutions in former Soviet republics Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan, nearly a thousand Belarussians protested the tyrannical rule of Aleksandr Lukashenko. Unlike the successes their counterparts had in Tbilisi, Kiev, and Bishkek, these demonstrators in Minsk "were beaten back by riot police officers swinging nightsticks," a wire service reports.
In all, three dozen of those who took to the streets were arrested, and within days were convicted and sentenced to jail terms of up to two weeks.
One opposition leader explains, "Belarusians are not obedient slaves. They are civilized people who are hoping to live in a free and democratic Europe."
In light of the changes in Eastern Europe (and many of the former Soviet republics) in which citizens want to break despotic regimes, will Belarus be next to dump a dictator and embrace Western (that is, human) ideals?
