Foreign Affairs Minister Artis Pabriks (People`s Party) said, participating in European Union foreign ministers` informal meeting in Luxembourg yesterday, that launching a European Commission representation in Belarus in the nearest future should be considered.
Pabriks presided at a EU foreign ministers` discussion on the EU`s policy on Belarus, aimed at promoting welfare, human rights and democracy in the country, LETA learned from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Pabriks told his colleagues about political and economic developments in Belarus and pointed to problems that hindered normal development of the Belarussian civic society.
The EU is interested in seeing European values enhanced in its neighbor states, Pabriks stressed. EU member states` joint and coordinated actions in promoting democratic values in the region is of a great importance, and the EU`s active cooperation with the United States is an important part of this process.
Pabriks told the EU foreign ministers of several strategic and tactical aspects of promoting democratization of Belarus, paying a particular attention to measures consolidating civic society. The Ukraine, another neighbor state of Belarus, will also play an important role in the democratization of Belarus in the future, he said.
